job of a psychologist/ psychiatrist

A lot of you guys don't improve in life because you are not ashamed of your current chaotic and messed up life.

Or, you don't feel enough guilt for some of your horrible wrong actions. Some of you lack conscience ...................................... You might be a miserable little worm, but then you go to a mental health professional & he tells you - "Accept the person who you are" "You are enough" "It's ok to be like this" Well, are sure about that? You go to bed 3 at night, you watch social media 4 hours daily, and you think you should accept the person you are? You are in a relationship with an abusive boyfriend and you think that it is ok to be like this? You watch porn and you are a bully - and you think you are enough? Really? ............................ An important thing mental health professionals should do but often don't is they should try to install the appropriate amount of guilt and shame to their client whenever needed (not always needed) How will we help a narcissist if we don't do that? How will we help an anti-social if we don't do it? .......................................... It's a very important social skill to be able to politely and timely install negative emotions to a few of our clients. Negative emotions can be transformative. Guilt and shame can motivate you hugely. But a therapist should not install extreme guilt and shame that knocks the client down and he is then unable to get up - that's pathological & unprofessional. ............................................ Some of us just need to feel bad about ourselves in order to grow in life. Telling a 17-year-old that he is amazing is not always helpful. Rather let's tell him that he can be amazing after 10 years. And then help the boy wholeheartedly. That's what a good mental health professional does. A good mental health professional doesn't give a tap on the back to a miserable, depressed, chaotic, and narcissistic kid. A good professional heals the pain, then installs responsibility and supports him throughout the whole process. .......................................... This is the job a psychologist/ psychiatrist can do amazingly well if they are well trained and have a good heart. But they can also do the opposite. This is why a psychologist/psychiatrist can be life-changing & life-threatening - both.
