Battle of Adwa

  The Battle of Adwa (also spelled Adowa or Adua ) was fought on 1 March 1896 near the town of Adwa . It was one of the most significant battles in African history because it ended an attempted Italian conquest of Ethiopia. Background In 1889, Italy signed the Treaty of Wuchale with Ethiopia. The Italian version stated that Ethiopia had to conduct its foreign affairs through Italy, effectively making it an Italian protectorate. The Amharic version said Ethiopia could use Italy's diplomatic assistance but was not required to do so. When Menelik II discovered the discrepancy, he rejected Italy's claim, leading to the First Italo-Ethiopian War (1895–1896).
