👑 Storyline of King Lear by William Shakespeare

👴 The Fatal Decision

Aging King King Lear of Britain decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters:

  • Goneril
  • Regan
  • Cordelia

He demands they publicly declare their love for him.

  • Goneril and Regan flatter him with exaggerated praise
  • Cordelia, honest and sincere, refuses to exaggerate and simply says she loves him “according to her duty”

Enraged, Lear disowns Cordelia and divides the kingdom between Goneril and Regan.

🐍 Betrayal and Cruelty

Once in power, Goneril and Regan reveal their true nature:

  • They strip Lear of his authority
  • Treat him with disrespect and cruelty
  • Reduce his followers and cast him out into a storm

Lear, now powerless, begins to lose his sanity, wandering in the wilderness during a violent storm.

🌩️ Parallel Story: Gloucester and His Sons

Another tragic subplot mirrors Lear’s story.

The nobleman Gloucester is deceived by his illegitimate son Edmund, who tricks him into believing his loyal son Edgar is a traitor.

  • Edgar is forced to flee and disguises himself as a mad beggar
  • Gloucester later realizes his mistake—but is brutally punished:
    • His eyes are gouged out by Regan and her allies

💔 Recognition and Redemption

Cordelia, now queen of France, returns with an army to rescue her father.

Lear is finally reunited with her:

  • He realizes his terrible mistake
  • They reconcile in a deeply emotional moment

⚔️ Tragic Ending

Despite reconciliation, tragedy strikes:

  • Cordelia is captured and executed
  • Lear dies of grief holding her dead body

Meanwhile:

  • Goneril and Regan turn against each other out of jealousy over Edmund
  • Goneril poisons Regan and then kills herself
  • Edmund is defeated by Edgar before dying

👑 Resolution

With the royal family destroyed, order is restored under surviving nobles like Edgar.
